It's great to be a Barbershopper!Visit one of the world's happiest organizations, a Society for men who enjoy singing. Barbershoppers by the thousands meet each week to create a unique sound known as barbershop harmony. Try it, and you'll find that there's nothing like an evening of harmonious vocalizing to chase away the cares of the day. What's that? You don't have a trained voice? You don't need one. Barbershop is for the average You can't read music? You don't need to. You'll start singing barbershop in a chorus, with lots of other guys who'll help you learn your part. And, to help you get the hang of it, the Barbershop Harmony Society offers schools, craft sessions, tape recordings and manuals that can help you become a better singer, sing in a quartet, learn music theory, learn how to arrange music or learn how to direct a chorus or coach quartets. You can go as far as you want, or you can simply sing in a chorus and enjoy the fun! Be a part of your community.Barbershoppers enjoy their hobby in many different ways. Besides the sheer enjoyment of singing in harmony, members of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA), informally known as the Barbershop Harmony Society, experience the thrill of performing in their communities. Barbershop quartets and choruses provide entertainment for business and conventions, for service clubs and at civic gatherings. They bring a smile to shut-ins, people at rest homes and hospitals. They bring enjoyment to senior-citizen centers, and they raise funds for worthy causes. Your barbershop chapter is a service organization; members get involved in community projects that make your city and neighborhood a better place to live. Be a part of an active organization.Barbershopping is more than the chorus and quartets you sing with. It is being part of the largest all-male singing organization in the world, with more than 35,000 members in 800 chapters in the United States and Canada. This organization provides opportunities for you to perform and enjoy your hobby outside your local community, through inter-chapter visitations, shows and conventions. Each year, barbershop singing groups meet to compete at their local division-, district- and international- level conventions. Each of these events provides an opportunity for you to meet men who love harmonizing, from other parts of the nation and the world. You'll enjoy making new friends and joining them in song. Forget your worries.Barbershoppers have a saying, "You can't be unhappy while singing." It's true! Singing occupies a part of the brain that makes you forget your day-to-day cares. You'll just relax and enjoy the music. And Barbershoppers live healthier lives, too. Studies have shown that singers have stronger respiratory and pulmonary systems and they live significantly longer. It really is great to be a Barbershopper! |
